Growing with Missibay School

A growing relationship is built on small, faithful steps. A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to take another step with Mishkeegogamang; this time with the Missibay Community School.

Having reliable access to fresh produce is a foundational piece of long-term health - something we can take for granted in a city with easy access to (relatively) affordable produce. Fruits and vegetables carry the essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that strengthen immune systems and support daily well-being.

Access to fresh produce remains a challenge for Northern communities. To help address that need, a team of volunteers from Redwood traveled up to Mish to set up the first of four planned greenhouses at the school.

This particular partnership with Missibay School serves multiple purposes: it's a way to provide healthy vegetables and fruits, yes, but it's also an opportunity for hands-on, outdoor education. Students will get to participate in the entire life-cycle of food production, learning how to plant, tend, and harvest their own crops.

For this initial trial phase, the first greenhouse is dedicated to the seventh-grade class. The students will be experimenting with growing lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and possibly strawberries.

We’re grateful for the invitation to walk alongside the Missibay Community School in this work, and we look forward to watching both the relationship and the garden grow.
